Am I the only person who doesn't have an iPod? I don't have the money for one, though I really want one. Why? Perhaps it's because of peer pressure. At U of M, where much of the student population is of rich kids, everybody has an iPod. When I see them all the time, I can't help but get jealous. But I don't have the money! ><

My mouth hurts a lot when the motrin wears off, so I try to take it before that happens. My cheeks are swollen and I look like a chipmunk. I am reluctant to go out in public because I look so rediculous. But I'm so tired of being couped up in this house, so I'm going to Matt's house, damnit. My cheeks are also starting to bruise...before long they'll be all black and blue. Yuck.

I really don't understand the difference between the iPod and "any other mp3 player that already existed"

I don't either, actually. I'm just...giving into peer pressure? :P Apple has really cleaver marketing techniques and makes it seem as if everybody has one.

Um, yeah. I don't have anything like an iPod either. Totally feeling the left outness.

I think it's because Apple makes it seem as if everybody has one.

I don't have one, nor ANY mp3 player, though I have lately been trying to find a cheap one with good storage space! I would love to have one for my 3 days on the greyhound, but alas, I cannot afford one either!

Get an iRiver. They are cheaper and work just as well.

I don't have an iPod. It doesn't help, though, that headphones give me killer headaches.

They do? Ouch! I couldn't live without headphones since I don't have the motivation to exercise without music on.

Perhaps that's why I don't exercise as often as I should.... hmmmm

Besides the fact they break, and I know my brother had one he'd said stopped charging in just 6 months because of the battery... Apple will charge you more to get it fixed than it cost to sell it to you, and they know it doesn't last long.

http://groups.google.com/group/ipod/tree/browse_frm/month/2006-02/19d35c2761fba749?rnum=41&_done=%2Fgroup%2Fipod%2Fbrowse_frm%2Fmonth%2F2006-02%3F#doc_6adaa782d9ff191f

And they know what once you start using it, once you get all your music on itunes, ones you start buying songs on itunes (that are very difficult to move into any other format), once you have everything organized on their player that its hard to move to anything else, ever again... Thats how a company makes money.

If it plays the songs you want, has the controls you expect, is a size that works and is reliable, what else do you want? I read the reviews rather than fall for their advertising.

And the ipod shuffle rates under a bunch of other models as far as budget mp3 players go on cnet:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4521-6532_7-5021434-1.html?tag=subnav

and the iPod is actually lower than the iRiver and creative in the other departments...

And my PDA has lasted 2 years now, and I know the previous owned had it for a year or 2... And it's been perfect since. (and does a lot more than play music) ;) But not everyone is as sensible as I am. Get a job and buy what you like, I know I wasted a lot of money from previous jobs in my time. Then saving a few bucks on something of better quality or something that really isn't a necessity tends to be an easier decision.

I hope everything gets better for your mouth too, see you tomorrow!

Good quotes from the first paragraph of that new york times article...

"We also own five Apple computers, and have become pathetically loyal because of our reliance on the iPod. "

"Alas, at least three of the iPods were replacements for ones that broke."

And this funny one later...
"If your iPod dies because of the battery you can send it back and get a new one for a mere $65.95, plus tax. Of course, you then lose all your music."

which is about 1/2 to 1/5 of the cost of just buying a new one anyway.
