Is it just me or does anybody else get pissed off when critics mention Uwe Boll in their Silent Hill reviews?

Please. The movie wasn't that bad at all.

I think the point is Boll strays too much from the source material, in that his movies can't be connected easily to the actual game series (regarding facts, characters, timelines, etc). While Silent Hill was 'good' to people who weren't that involved in the game series, it did have a serious case of deviation from the facts, which upset a lot of the more avid game-series fans. It also relied almost purely on shock gore/horror than the kind of dark built-up suspenseful mood which the game provided.

It seems as if SH fans are the ones that are more satisfied with it.

Most of the problem/comments with this Silent Hill are the same as with any video game movie. It's basically this: "A movie based on a video games will can never be as *good* an experience as the game." When you're playing the game you have full control over what the characters do, what path they take, how long you're playing. Many games are less linear while a movie is completely linear, so in a game you are the director, the actors, you make the movie, rather than being an idle viewer. You typically invest more time in a game longer than any movie can be, some games are just as cinematic (Metal Gear) as movies.

All a movie based on a game can be is a quick synopsis of the game, or a completely different story in the same game world, like they did with resident evil, or advent children... which I thought were both good movie because it didn't try to recreate events in the game, but before/after/parallel events. I don't really need to see a retelling of the game, I've already played it, give me something new, but not something *completely* different.

Video games have long surpassed movies as far as entertainment value goes for me, and if you really weigh the costs ($8 for a movie + $5 for junk food) (times 2 if you're on a date), then it's almost the same price as a new game, see 2 movies and it is. Thats why unless its something thats 'action packed' and experienced best in a theater environment, I'll usually wait till DVD.
